WELCOME to
The BATEMAN Family Tree
This website sets out who the direct ancestors and immediate relatives are that make up my part of the Bateman Family Tree; it tells of where they originated from, who they married, the many children they had and what stories they can tell. The aim of the Bateman Family Tree is "to record the past and to leave its findings for the family's future generations to both add to and to carry forward".
PEOPLE AND PLACES
All of the direct ancestors talked about in this Tree originate from towns and villages in the English counties of Berkshire, Durham, Hampshire, Northumberland, Nottinghamshire, Somerset and Staffordshire. Others are from the Isle of Lewis and Shetland in Scotland. Their occupations include agricultural and general labourers, blacksmiths, boat-builders, carters, coal miners, cordwainers, crofters, engine-fitters, farmers, farm bailiffs, framework knitters, gardeners, gypsies, hawkers, publicans, seafarers, shopkeepers, servants, seedsman, tailors, tanner boys, washer-women, weavers warper, wheeler and a serial convict.
The principal ancestral family names in the tree are Bateman, Kinson, Walker and Wood, but of course there are many more including Laurenson, Lee, MacDonald, Newham, Ostler, Palmer and Richardson; each of whom have had their impact on the family's history. More than 2,000 people and 700 marriages are recorded in this ancestral Bateman Family Tree that covers a time span taking us back over 400 years to the time when King James 1st ruled England, the Mayflower sailed with Pilgrims to the New World and Oliver Cromwell defeated the Royalists in the English Civil War. In all the years that have gone by since, many ancestors died young or before their time whilst others, fortunately lived longer happier lives.
One theme unites everyone; each of them has contributed to the history of The Bateman Family Tree.
